The scenic plains of Moroto, Uganda, became a vibrant meeting ground on 20–21 November 2025 as more than 150 young pastoralists from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and South Sudan came together for the IYRP East Africa Pastoralist Youth Gathering of 2025. For two days, the voices of young herders echoed across the region, united by a shared vision: to shape a stronger, more secure future for pastoralism ahead of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) in 2026. The gathering was co-organized by the African Youth Pastoralist Initiative (AYPI), a youth-led network that empowers young pastoralists, advocates for their interests in policy dialogues, and promotes climate-smart agriculture and sustainable livelihoods across Africa.
Held against the backdrop of picturesque Moroto rangelands, the gathering offered a rare and powerful space for pastoralist youth to reflect, exchange, and lead, marking a significant milestone for a generation often tasked with sustaining pastoral traditions while navigating new pressures, from climate change to shifting land-use systems.
